Food Marketing
In today’s computer lab we are going to check out food marketing! The lab will be done in three parts, be sure to finish each part and hand everything in at the end of the class.
Part 1 – Food Advertisements
You must find 4 food advertisements (using the internet) that follow the guidelines below:
a) Celebrity Power – your favourite sports star or celebrity is telling you that their product is the best! Kids listen, not realizing that the star is being paid to promote the product.
b) Put Downs - when you put down your competition's product to make your own product seem better.
c) Cool Factor - this is when advertisers try to convince you that if you don't use their products, you are a nerd. Usually advertisers do this by showing people who look uncool trying a product and then suddenly become hip looking and do cool things.
d) Family Fun - a product is shown as something that brings families together, or helps them have fun together; all it takes is for Mum or Dad to bring home the "right" food, and a ho-hum dinner turns into a family party.
Part 2 – Digital Marketing
Recreate the chart below, fill in the missing blanks of the chart
Name | Description (what is it) | Example |
Mobile Marketing | ||
Digital “360” Buzz | ||
Viral Video | ||
Game Vertising | ||
Advertising through Avatars |
Part 3 – Food Stylist
Answer the questions below:
1. What is a food stylist?
2. Describe 3 techniques that a food stylist uses.
3. How does are hamburgers, drinks and salads “styled”?
4. Do you agree or disagree with the use of food styling?
*Be sure to hand everything in at the end of the computer lab*

I am going to bring in your photo journals for you to pick out your favorite pictures OR if you still have them on a USB, storage device, etc. I will copy them and send them out to get printed. We'll talk more about this during lab.

Photo Journal
A photo journal tells a story. Your words (captions) and pictures must complement each other so I can experience the trip through your eyes!
Please be sure to include a caption and a brief description of each stand you visited. What did you learn from the people working there? What is the difference of shopping at a market vs. a grocery store? Which did you prefer? Explain your answer.
You should have at least 19 photos from your journey. You will need to divide the photos evenly among your group members and complete your specific section of the journal (perhaps outline your photos in a different colour or boarder to differentiate between group members). I will need to know what section you are responsible for in advance. You will be evaluated on your section and it is reported as an INDIVIDUAL MARK!
Please be sure to consult the rubric while completing your assignment and feel free to see me if you have any questions.
Have fun!

McDonald's Happy Meal
Below you will find a link to an article published in Yahoo News Canada.
http://ca.news.yahoo.com/s//yahoocanada/101013/canada/mcdonald_s_happy_meal_resists_decomposition_for_six_months
After reading this article, select and read...
[Did you know? Before the Happy Meal, there was the Fun Meal]
Is this a credible source of information? Why or why not? How do you know?
Your Task:
1) In pairs, you will create your own healthy 'fun meal'. You should aim to include the four food groups, an appealing box/container, and a toy or puzzle that will encourage kids to buy it.
2) Independently, you will write a short newspaper article promoting your 'fun meal.' You can discuss the evolution of the happy meal/fast food and be sure to incorporate why your 'fun meal' is the better alternative.

Thanksgiving Side Dish
Thanksgiving is fast approaching! For this computer lab you need to find a recipe for two Thanksgiving side dishes. I want you to think back to your last year’s Thanksgiving, how did you celebrate? What did you eat? What was one of your side dishes? Now I want you to find me one of those side dish recipes!
The first recipe should be a normal recipe, the second recipe must be a healthier option. It is your choice of whether it is low fat, low sodium, etc. But be sure that it is a healthier option.
When you hand in your recipes, include:
- Both recipes (using the sheet provided)
- Why you chose your recipes (in three senteces)
- Your response to the three questions in paragraph 1
- An explanation (3 sentences) of why recipe 2 - the healther option is better than recipe 1. Here are a few things to think about: what ingredients are you putting into the food, what are the calories, what are the quantities, what is the portion size, etc.
*When you have finished answering these questions hand in your responses to Ms. Vance*

Recipe Search (Wednesday, Sept 29)
During this computer lab you will be required to find two recipes using the internet. The link below guides you in how to write a recipe, it includes all the information that is necessary in a good recipe. Using this guideline I want you to find a recipe for something sweet and a recipe for a Thanksgiving side dish.
In chapter 3 of our text book we learned that eating patterns are very important for children. We also know that it is no surprise that sweets are a part of our diet. We are going to combine these two ideas to come up with a ‘sweet treat’. We are going to take a few ideas out of the book Deceptively Delicious, written by Jessica Seinfeld. Read the paragraphs below to get an idea of what her book is about.
It has become common knowledge that childhood obesity rates are increasing every year. But the rates continue to rise. And between busy work schedules and the inconvenient truth that kids simply refuse to eat vegetables and other healthy foods, how can average parents ensure their kids are getting the proper nutrition and avoiding bad eating habits?
As a mother of three, Jessica Seinfeld can speak for all parents who struggle to feed their kids right and deal nightly with dinnertime fiascos. As she wages a personal war against sugars, packaged foods, and other nutritional saboteurs, she offers appetizing alternatives for parents who find themselves succumbing to the fastest and easiest (and least healthy) choices available to them. Her modus operandi? Her book is filled with traditional recipes that kids love, except they're stealthily packed with veggies hidden in them so kids don't even know! With the help of a nutritionist and a professional chef, Seinfeld has developed a month's worth of meals for kids of all ages that includes, for example, pureed cauliflower in mac and cheese, and kale in spaghetti and meatballs. She also provides revealing and humorous personal anecdotes, tear–out shopping guides to help parents zoom through the supermarket, and tips on how to deal with the kid that "must have" the latest sugar bomb cereal.
But this book also contains much more than recipes and tips. By solving problems on a practical level for parents, Seinfeld addresses the big picture issues that surround childhood obesity and its long–term (and ruinous) effects on the body. With the help of a prominent nutritionist, her book provides parents with an arsenal of information related to kids' nutrition so parents understand why it's important to throw in a little avocado puree into their quesadillas. She discusses the critical importance of portion size, and the specific elements kids simply must have (as opposed to adults) in order to flourish now and in the future: protein, calcium, vitamins, and Omega 3 and 6 fats.
Jessica Seinfeld's book is practical, easy–to–read, and a godsend for any parent that wants their kids to be healthy for a long time to come.
Your task is to find a recipe that fits with the guidelines for writing a recipe as well as healthy eating for children. Highlight, in 3 sentences, what makes this recipe so different, and why you chose this recipe. Type out your recipe and your response to the two questions and hand them in to Ms. Vance.
